Rodent Exclusion – Fixing the Problem Before it Starts

When people think about California weather, they generally think about San Diego.  San Diego has just a 10-degree difference from its average summer temperature to the average winter temperature.  Even in Los Angeles, the difference between August and December is not even 20 degrees.

When you tell someone that Northern California has 100-degree summers, and overnight winter lows approaching freezing, they tend to look at you like you’re crazy.

This temperature difference is part of the reason that we have such serious rodent issues in December and January.  This time of year, rodent control is the biggest part of our business.  As we said, it does get cold overnight during the winter months.  Rats and mice are looking to get out of the cold and find food to get them through the season.  In previous blogs, we talked about the damage rats can do, and how the result of an infestation is to more rats are often attracted to your home.

Believe us when we say that the best time to think about rats in your attic is before you ever get them.  Just because you have not had a problem does not mean that you are immune to the possibility of getting rats.

Even if you had someone check your home previously, that does not mean that you do not have a potential problem now.  For example, houses settle over time. This settling can cause a garage door to not be as flush with the walls as they used to be.  Remember that mice only need the space the size of a dime to get in, and rats only need slightly more space.

Other areas of your home, such as your roof, also show wear over time.  An opening that was not there a couple of years ago is now just waiting to let in all sorts of rodents and pests.
